Overview: The Global Refugee Inclusion in Digital Working Group (GRID) is in the design phase, aiming to bridge the digital divide for refugees. This initiative, aligned with the Global Compact on Refugees, seeks to empower refugees by providing access to digital tools and training.
Background and Purpose:
While digital technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for enhancing protection, integration, and empowerment of refugee communities, they also carry risks. The UN Secretary-General has noted that digital technology can be a new source of discrimination and bias, potentially amplifying sexism and other forms of inequality. Predictive tools and AI systems may expose individuals to discrimination in areas like employment, accommodation and justice. However, digital inclusion programs aim to provide equitable access to technology, enabling refugees to pursue opportunities for learning and integration into the digital economy. Co-designed digital services can facilitate access to public services for migrants and refugees, considering security and data protection. Thus, while we must be vigilant about the risks of digital technologies in fostering hate and discrimination, we also must recognize and harness their potential to support refugee communities and enhance their well-being. Six in 10 people will need reskilling because of AI by 2027. If we do not take action now, there will be many people left behind. Now is the time.
